We’re looking for a Senior WordPress engineer to partner with our product and design team to define and lead the technical roadmap as we adopt new tech like block-based themes and AI.

You’ll need to be an expert in the WordPress block editor, themes, browser performance (CWV), and conversion rate optimization. A champion of systems, automation, and UX to generate high performing websites our members love.

This Senior Software Engineer Role
We're not looking for the average WordPress developer – we're looking for someone who can come in and make a quick & lasting impact on our team & product. 

This high-level role will help chart our roadmap for maintaining and advancing a large multisite network by combining modern WordPress features and professional development technologies (like Javascript/React, Tailwind, Playwright, Laravel and PSR standards).

The successful candidate will partner with our remote team to research new solutions, define development plans, and lead projects to develop exceptional user experiences for launching high-performing websites.

Key Responsibilities

  • Partner with product/design team to define and drive the technical roadmap for the Carrot website platform.
  • Be our expert in modern WordPress features—block editor, themes
  • Deeply understand and optimize for browser performance (CWV)
  • Advise and contribute to conversion rate optimization at scale
  • Champion systems, optimization, and automation
  • Proactively identify and reduce risks before starting major projects
  • Set standards, create and lead projects, delegate work to others
  • Go out of your way to reduce complexity
  • Take additional “tech lead” responsibilities as needed for driving to results

  • Adoption of modern WordPress features like full site editing and block-based themes
  • Building dynamic content tools like Block Pattern libraries
  • Simplifying complex user interactions between content and site design at scale
  • Automating website creation and page layouts with patterns and generative AI

You have a strong background in leading projects from goal to a successful launch:

  • Collaborate with other teams to understand the customer's needs
  • Creating work plans (epic, tickets, timelines)
  • Delegating work throughout a team
  • Ensuring project timelines are met
  • Creating technical documentation
  • And measuring results to ensure goals are met
You have extensive experience being a positive team influencer that works well cross-functionally:
  • Working across teams (product, CX, etc) to ensure our products are meeting customer needs
  • Partnering with other Engineering leads on shared goals and supporting connected products
  • Mentoring and unblocking others in the team

Technical Qualifications

  • Expert in WordPress visual/block editor (Gutenberg)
  • Extensive experience building and maintaining ​​​themes, plugins
  • Experience building and maintaining automated builds and testing (Playwright)
  • Experience with PHP frameworks like Laravel/Symfony
  • Experience with Front End frameworks (React, Tailwind)
  • Commitment to web best practices including accessibility, responsive design, and CWV
  • WordPress at scale (Multisite or other)

Key Qualifications:

  • 6+ years of experience building custom WordPress products
  • Experience working at a remote-first company and with a close team
  • Experience shipping customer-facing products
  • Excellent written and verbal remote work communication skills
  • Self-directed project leadership skills
The compensation for this role will be based on relevant experience & skillset that's evaluated throughout the interview process. The estimated salary band for this role is $130,000 - $150,000.
